Many have come to associate the term, Coachella with the incredibly famous music and arts festival held in Indio, Palm Springs, as well as the avant-garde, boho fashion sense of the festival’s attendees. But the said term’s origin stems from the locale of the festival itself – Coachella Valley, a stretch of desert in Southern California.
Spanning 45 miles in Riverside County, Coachella Valley offers incredible outdoor experiences and access to nearby major cities. Plus, one cannot deny the dynamic and vibrant vibe of this area, given the number of great places, fine brews, and colorful culture present here.
Here’s a compilation of the things that truly define Coachella Valley:
Museums
Despite being a wide stretch of desert, the valley has a surprising amount of museums. Cabot’s Pueblo Museum in Desert Hot Springs is a house museum built by local hero, Cabot Yerxa. Built in the 1940s, this museum is home to a massive collection of Native American artifacts.
The Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert in Rancho Mirage is an interactive museum featuring different exhibits designed to let children explore, discover, and learn using their five senses.
Meanwhile, the Elvis Honeymoon Hideaway was literally what it was – a beautiful estate where the King himself and his wife Priscilla spent their honeymoon years. It is now open to visitors and guided tours are available in the afternoon.
Sightseeing
Coachella Valley has an abundance of parks, canyons, and various other natural formations that add spectacle to the scenery.
The Indian Canyons is actually made up of three canyons, namely: the Palm Canyon, the Andreas Canyon, and the Murray Canyon. All three offer trails for hiking, trekking, and horseback riding, as well as picnic trails and gift shops.
The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is a desert-based zoo that houses a massive variety of animals and plants. Almost 1,500 plant species can be found here. Meanwhile, animals roam quite freely in wide enclosures.
And if you want to enjoy the beautiful Palm Desert skyline, consider riding a hot air balloon via Balloon Above the Desert. This is where you can take in the sunrise or the sunset, as well as breathtaking landscape views.
Craft beverages
It isn’t California without some signature craft beverages. The Coachella Valley Brewing Company specializes in expertly crafted beer made using locally sourced ingredients. A strong emphasis is made on farm-to-table brewing here.
They offer brewery tours on Fridays and Saturdays. If beer isn’t your thing, Desert Distilling is a Coachella Valley-based distillery that specializes in hand-crafted spirits. There are tours and tastings available for all visitors 21 and up.
Arts and music
Of course, you can’t talk about Coachella Valley without including the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival or simply Coachella. Held annually, this festival lasts for two weekends and plays host to a wide array of music artists, art exhibits, and a variety of mouthwatering eats.
If big, noisy crowds aren’t your thing however, there are other smaller festivals such as the Indian Wells Arts and Food Festival, the La Quinta Arts Festival, and the Southwest Arts Festival.
